Les Mis is actually set on France, but everyone has British accents because “I don’t know” — but I love that interpretation nonetheless.
Representation matters and there was so much backlash to David Oyelowo being cast as Javert because he wasn’t white / historically inaccurate. It’s such a diverse cast and that’s historically inaccurate. History has been whitewashed and I think there neeeds to be more diverse casting when it comes to adapting classic novels.
Another great one was the recent adaptation of Vanity Fair. Also, check out The Spanish Princess on Starz (they’re doing the Black Tudors justice). But yes, Les Mis was set in France but I found that many folks (white) from outside Europe who have never been there act like Europeans are just white and that’s much ado with how British period dramas (set before WW2) paint history. In my opinion.
