The Zoom Where It Happens

I wrote this poem as a parody of ‘The Room Where It Happens’ from Broadway musical Hamilton, on Alexander Hamilton.

This is also inspired from the Hamilton parody of their own song, from which this takes its title.

Ah, Mister Rafi

My bro, hello

Did’ya see the news

about this novel coronavirus?

No

You know how I work at university?

Yeah

I can’t go there anymore,

now self-esteem’s low

and we all have to do is stay inside.

That’s a lot less work

Never thought Netflix would be saving lives

Ha.

I know self-isolation can get in your brain

but folks have been talking on Zoom all the same

It’s great

Stress less, rest more

Do whatever it takes to follow Corona’s laws

But all this technology’s annoying

Hate the twits, love the Twitter

Now I gotta go, watching Netflix over dinner

On Zoom, brother Ashton does his theatrical dramatics

and on occasion, someone’s voice goes rather quite static

people just going out for food and their tipple

as these actors just want to meet with people

they want to go back to theatre, Silhouette and sing

hard to rehearse under measures of social distancing

and it’s been five weeks since we went into lockdown

so now they must do drama in the way most profound

Looks hard but just talk on Facetime

and just watch stories unravel on Amazon Prime

no one knows what to do day to day

reading, films, boardgames, or watch online plays

but as I turn on the television anyway

I see protesters in Michigan, faces in disarray

claiming lockdown is against their rights, oh USA

and we know better than to be congregating

even in protest, we shouldn’t be meeting

Meanwhile,

Boris has skipped the COBRA committee

Meanwhile

Trump says Dettol will kill the Corona disease

who goes on TV looking always grouchy

thinks he knows better than Dr. Anthony Fauchy

maybe we can solve one problem with another, one victory with Corona, in other words

oh no

a quick, Corona cull

low blow

I’m not one for violence

but we have to trust science

and eat Netflix over dinner

I won’t be mad if they sailed down the river

when you’re not spreading the virus wide

is it too much to ask for you to stay inside?

It’s not all doom, stay home watch Disney cartoons

when you want to socialise click Zoom
